Marin Avenue

Marin Avenue in north Berkeley climbs straight up a hill with a 25% grade and is the steepest street in the entire San Francisco area. The street was laid out with the thought that a cable-car route would run on it, but that never happened. I (John Allen) have ridden a bicycle down a couple blocks of Marin Avenue -- slowly and carefully, because any sudden increase in braking would have pitched me over the handlebar. In 1980, I lived for a month on Marin Avenue and rode the 1/2 block uphill from a side street every day when I came home from work. That is about all I could manage on a bicycle which lacked ultra-low gears. My usual route to Grizzly Peak Boulevard was Spruce Street.
